SUMTER, S.C. – The Benedict College men's tennis team picked up their first win of the season with a 5-4 victory over Spartanburg Methodist College on Friday at the USC Sumter Invitational at the Palmetto Tennis Center.
Earlier in the day, Benedict dropped an 8-1 decision to The Citadel. Benedict's win came at No. 1 doubles, where Nathaniel Pinkney and Quentin Eloise beat Roy Hobson and Matthew Henson, 8-6.
Against Spartanburg Methodist, Benedict won two doubles matches, and forfeited at No. 3 doubles. Benedict also gave up two points in singles, but won at No. 3 and No. 4 singles to secure a 5-4 victory.
Juan Hernandez took a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Cody Brown at No. 3 singles, and Armando Flores beat Jacob Gault 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.
Benedict, now 1-3, will take on tournament host USC Sumter on Saturday morning, then will play Coker College at 1:30 p.m.
