COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College men's tennis team went 5-1 at the SIAC Tennis Roundup, held in Columbia Thursday through Saturday.
The Tigers opened the roundup with wins over Spring Hill and Fort Valley State on Thursday. Benedict cruised to a 9-0 victory over LeMoyne-Owen Friday morning before suffering a 5-2 setback to rival Morehouse Friday afternoon. Benedict regrouped for a 9-0 victory over Lane.
On Saturday, Benedict wrapped up the roundup with a 6-2 victory over Tuskegee.
Against Morehouse, the Tigers fell behind 3-0 after doubles play, winning at No. 1 in a close 9-7 match and then taking another close 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles.
Nathaniel Pinkney and Quentin Eloise won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, but Morehouse took a victory at No. 3 singles, then clinched the match with a win at No. 4 singles when Terrell Green beat Juan Hernandez in a tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-3, 10-4.
On Saturday, Benedict claimed two of the three doubles matches, then won four singles matches in straight sets. Pinkney beat Joseph Messam, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1, while Quentin Eloise beat Michael Graham 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2. Hernandez won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 singles and Malek Selmen won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.
The Tigers improve to 7-6 overall and 5-1 in the SIAC. Benedict is back in action next Saturday, hosting Johnson C. Smith University at 2 p.m. in a non-conference match.
