COLUMBIA, S.C. – Johnson C. Smith scored six runs in the sixth inning to take an 11-9 victory over Benedict College in their softball season opener on Saturday afternoon.

The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was postponed after three complete innings due to darkness. The two teams will resume the game on March 7 when Benedict travels to Charlotte for a rematch with the Lady Golden Bulls.

Benedict scored a run in the first and second innings for a 2-0 lead. Khayreyah Parrish had an RBI single in the first inning. Kelsey James singled and later scored on a wild pitch in the second inning.

Johnson C. Smith scored five runs in the top of the third inning, thanks to three walks and two wild pitches. The Lady Tigers cut the lead to 5-4 with two runs in the bottom of the third when Parrish brought home Brianna Billie on a sacrifice fly and Starkeira Daniel brought home Tandreanna Conyers. Benedict tied the game 5-5 in the fifth inning on a double by Cherica Pye.

The Lady Golden Bulls added six runs in the sixth on five hits and a Benedict error.

Benedict scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Sharik Woods had an RBI triple and Amari Lawson followed with an RBI single. Billie brought home Lawson with a triple and Billie scored on an RBI single by Daniel.

Benedict is back in action on Monday, hosting Shaw University at 1 p.m.
