COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Tigers rallied with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, then got a game-saving catch from
Myles Snype in the outfield to end the game and beat the Montreat College Cavaliers 8-7 in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday.
Montreat used a pair of home runs and took advantage of five Benedict errors to take a 16-7 victory in the first game of the doubleheader.
Benedict moves to 8-4 overall. Montreat is now 9-13.
The Tigers pushed across three runs in the bottom of the first inning and added two more runs in the second for a 5-2 lead in the second game.
Armando Valentin brought home the first run on a single. A groundout by
Robert Troiano III brought home another run and Valentin scored on a Montreat error. A pair of Montreat errors and a single by
Skyler Sabado scored a run in the second inning, and an RBI groundout by
David White Jr. made it 5-2.
The Cavaliers tied the game with three runs in the third, then took a 6-5 lead in the fourth inning. Valentin had an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 6-6.
The Tigers took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. With runners on second and third and no outs,
Andrew McCoy lofted a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home
Michael Garner. Sabado then scored on
Joel Manzano's suicide squeeze bunt.
The Cavaliers added a run in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly. With a runner on third, Ricardo DeArmas hit a long fly ball to right field and Snypes caught the ball while crashing into the outfield fence and hung on to the ball for the final out of the game.
In the first game, Benedict started out with four runs in the first inning thanks to a three-run homer by
Reinaldo Santiago. A solo homer by Manzano in the fourth gave the Tigers a 5-4 lead. After Montreat took the lead with three runs in the fifth, Benedict cut the lead to 7-6 on an RBI single by Santiago. Montreat then scored seven runs in the sixth inning on just four hits and a Benedict error.
Benedict returns to action for a conference weekend series against Miles College with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon, and a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
