COLUMBIA, S.C. – David White Jr. drove in four runs and Benedict baseball coach Selwyn Young captured his 200th career win as the Tigers defeated the Paine Lions 10-4 in the first game of a conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Field.
Paine took advantage of eight walks and three wild pitches by six Tiger pitchers and three Benedict errors to win the second game 6-1.
Benedict moves to 20-11 overall and 10-5 in the SIAC. Young is now 200-130 in eight years at the helm of the Tigers. Paine moves to 18-6 overall and 10-5 in the SIAC.
White had an RBI double and blasted a three-run homer in the fourth inning of the first game to give the Tigers an 8-0 lead. Armando Valentin added a two-run homer in the sixth inning. James Roman went the distance on the mound to improve to 6-0 on the season. He gave up seven hits, walked one and struck out seven.
In the second game, Paine was nursing a 1-0 lead heading into the fifth inning, when the Lions got a run with a bases-loaded walk, then a single by Jaron Johnson allowed two more runs to score to give Paine a 4-0 lead.
Benedict got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Skyler Sabado, celebrating his birthday on Saturday, hit a solo home run to left-center field.
A two-out fielding error in the sixth inning by the Tigers allowed two more Paine runs to score.
Benedict honored its four seniors – Omar Compton, Reinaldo Santiago, Robert Troiano III and Roman in between games.
The Tigers play their final 10 games of the season on the road, starting with a non-conference game against Voorhees in Denmark, S.C., on Tuesday. Benedict plays a conference weekend series at Claflin next weekend.
