ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Claflin swept a softball doubleheader over Benedict College on Saturday, snapping the Lady Tigers' 11-game winning streak.
Claflin won the first game 14-3 in five innings. The Lady Panthers got a two-run homer in the fifth inning to take a 7-3 victory. Claflin improves to 23-15 overall and 13-5 in the SIAC. Benedict falls to 22-17 overall and 10-4 in the SIAC.
Benedict had four hits and committed three errors in the first game as Claflin jumped out to a 14-0 lead. The Lady Tigers got their three runs in the fifth inning when Amari Lawson scored on a Claflin error, Torcealon Kelly stole home and Brianna Billie scored on a sacrifice fly by Khayreyah Parrish.
In the second game, Claflin jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Lady Tigers tied the game with three runs in the third inning when Parrish hit a two-out single to score Kelly. A bunt single by Erika Dargan brought home two runs.
Claflin regained the lead in the fourth inning, scoring a run on a Benedict error. The Lady Panthers added three more runs in the fifth, getting a run on a passed ball and stolen base, then a two-run homer by Erica Davis.
Claflin and Benedict will play the third game in the weekend series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
