HEPHZIBAH, Ga. – The Benedict College softball team gave up five unearned runs on three errors and Miles College took advantage for a 13-5 victory in the first round of the 2017 SIAC Softball Tournament at Diamond Lakes Regional Park on Thursday.
Benedict drops into the loser's bracket and will face Lane at 10 a.m. in a loser's bracket contest.
Miles scored five runs in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of two Benedict errors to score two unearned runs. The Lady Tigers were able to cut the lead with three runs in the top of the fourth when
Melissa Jenkins hit a two-run homer to left field.
Khayreyah Parrish later hit into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded, allowing
Starkeira Daniel to score.
The Lady Golden Bears added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning for an 8-3 lead. The Lady Tigers were once again able to stage a rally and scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning to cut the lead to 8-5. Daniel doubled to bring home
Sharik Woods and Daniel later scored on a Miles throwing error.
Miles put the game away in the bottom of the fifth. A walk and two singles loaded the bases with two outs. A single allowed one run to score and another came home on a wild pitch. Another error by the Lady Tigers allowed three more Miles runs to score and end the game.
Amari Lawson was the only Benedict player with multiple hits, going 2-for-3. Jenkins had two RBIs, while Woods and Daniel each had one.
