Tuskegee Tops Benedict 4-2 In 10 Innings In SIAC Baseball Tournament

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Benedict College Tigers managed just seven hits and dropped a 4-2 decision in 10 innings to the Tuskegee Golden Tigers in the opening round of the 2017 SIAC Baseball Tournament at Lake Olmstead Stadium on Thursday morning.

The loss sends Benedict, now 25-15, to the loser's bracket. Benedict will face the loser between Miles and Claflin. That game was halted in the sixth inning with Miles leading 7-1. That game will be resumed at 8:30 a.m. on Friday. Thursday's other two scheduled afternoon games were also rained out and pushed back to Friday. Benedict is scheduled to play in the elimination game at 3 p.m. on Friday.

After pounding the Golden Tigers for 46 hits in a three-game sweep last week, the Tigers struggled at the plate in Thursday's morning contest. Trey Nelson, who didn't pitch in last weekend's conference series, held the Tigers to five hits over nine innings, walked four and struck out six.

Tuskegee scored a run in the third inning. A walk, a single and a stolen base put runners on second and third with one out. Ryan Green hit a sacrifice fly to score the first run.

Benedict didn't crack the scoreboard until the bottom of the eighth inning. Skyler Sabado led off with a single to right field and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Darian Williams. Sabado was able to advance to third on a wild pitch, and later came home on another wild pitch.

Starting pitcher James Roman went nine innings on the mound for the Tigers, surrendering five hits, walking three and striking out five. Cheyenne Lopez came in relief to start the 10th inning. Two singles sandwiched around a hit batter loaded the bases for the Golden Tigers. Green hit a two-run single through the right side. Gemini Jackson added a sacrifice fly for a 4-1 lead.

Armando Valentin doubled in the bottom of the 10th for Benedict and scored on a two-out single by Myles Snype.
