ATLANTA – The Clark Atlanta Panthers scored seven straight points in the final two minutes of the game to pull away and take a 78-75 victory over the Benedict College Tigers in a SIAC men's basketball game on Saturday in Clark Atlanta's VWH Gym.
Benedict trailed by as many as 11 points, 48-37, early in the second half. The Tigers went on a 15-2 run, capped by a
Tyler Whitehead 3-pointer to take a 52-50 lead, with 12:41 remaining. The game was close the rest of the way.
A 3-pointer by
Jelani Watson-Gayle gave the Tigers a 73-70 lead with 2:17 on the clock. The Panthers scored the next seven points for a 77-73 lead with 28 seconds left.
Cairo Brown hit two free throws with 19 seconds left to cut the lead to two points, then the Panthers made one free throw with 18 seconds left. Benedict missed two 3-point attempts in the final 11 seconds.
Benedict had their seven-game winning streak snapped and fell to 15-4 overall and 8-3 in the SIAC. Clark Atlanta stretched its winning streak to 12 and improved to 17-1 overall and 11-0 in the SIAC.
Brown led the Tigers with 21 points, while
Brandon Morris added 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.
Benedict returns to Atlanta on Monday to take on undefeated and 14
th-ranked Morehouse College.
