ATLANTA – Clark Atlanta made two free throws in the final 29 seconds of overtime to take a 54-52 victory over the Benedict College Lady Tigers in a SIAC women's basketball game on Saturday at Clark Atlanta's VWH Gym.
MiKeisha Moore hit a jumper with 43 seconds left in regulation to give the Lady Tigers a 43-41 lead. Clark Atlanta came back and scored with 34 seconds left to tie the contest and send the game to an extra period.
In overtime, Benedict jumped out to a 47-43 lead after a layup by
Shirvel Luke with 4:11 on the clock. The Lady Panthers scored the next seven points as the Lady Tigers committed turnovers on three consecutive trips down the floor. Then Moore was called for a foul and a technical foul, and the Lady Panthers sank three free throws for a 50-47 lead.
A three-point play by
Ayanna Armstead tied the game at 52 with 36 seconds on the clock. Clark Atlanta pulled ahead with a free throw by Lauren Turner with 29 seconds left. Turner sank another free throw with 15 seconds left for the final 54-52 score.
Moore led Benedict with 12 points. Benedict shot 28.8 percent (19-of-66), while Clark Atlanta shot 25.7 percent (18-of-70). Benedict out-rebounded Clark Atlanta 63-44, as
Andresha Smith had 11 rebounds, while
Essence Stinnette and
Shanaissa White each had 10 rebounds.
The Lady Tigers fall to 5-14 overall and 5-6 in the SIAC. Clark Atlanta improves to 11-7 overall and 9-2 in the SIAC.
Benedict returns to action next Saturday at home against Albany State at 1 p.m.
