MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers picked up their first win of the season, taking an 87-82 victory over Barry University on Friday night.
Ay'Anna Bey led the Lady Tigers with a double-double, scoring 20 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
Ayanna Armstead added 17 points, hitting five 3-pointers.
Essence Stinnette and
Camryn Bostick had 14 points each, while
Jasmine Gholson reached double figures with 11 points.
The Lady Tigers move to 1-1 on the season. Barry falls to 1-2.
Benedict jumped out to an early 11-4 lead, but Barry rallied to take a 27-25 lead after the first quarter. The game remained close in the second quarter, with Barry taking as much as a six-point lead, 38-32. Benedict led by two points on several occasions. The Bucs led 49-47 at the half.
In the third quarter, Benedict rallied from a five-point deficit, 56-51, to go on a 7-0 run for a 58-56 lead after a 3-pointer by Armstead. Bostick scored a layup at the end of the quarter to give Benedict a 67-65 lead.
The Lady Tigers scored the first six points of the fourth quarter, getting a 3-pointer by Stinnette and three free throws by Bey for a 73-65 lead, and the Lady Tigers led the rest of the way.
Benedict is back in action on Saturday, continuing their Florida road trip at Palm Beach Atlantic for a 3 p.m. contest.
