Lady Tigers Hold Off Lane, 65-61

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College women's basketball team won their fifth straight game with a 65-61 victory over Lane College on Monday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.

Benedict improves to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the SIAC.  Lane falls to 2-5 overall and 1-1 in the SIAC.

Ay'Anna Bey led the Lady Tigers with 18 points and had a team-high eight rebounds. Chnaireia Strozier scored a season-high 10 points.

Benedict shot a season-low 32 percent (16-of-50), and made just 4-of-21 (19 percent) from 3-point range, but made 29-of-31 (93.5 percent) from the free-throw line. The Lady Tigers held Lane to just 35.8 percent shooting (19-of-53), but the Lady Dragons struggled from the line, making 17-of-28 (60.7 percent).

The Lady Tigers started out hot, scoring the first 12 points of the game and had a 22-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. Benedict scored the first four points of the second quarter for a 16-point lead, 25-9, but the Lady Dragons chipped away at the lead and cut the lead to 30-26 at the half.

Lane took its first lead of the game, 42-39, after a 3-pointer by Addie McNeely with 4:17 left in the third quarter. McNeely led the Lady Dragons with 23 points. Benedict regained the lead, 47-46, on a pair of free throws by Jasmine Gholson with 1:40 left in the quarter. A pair of free throws by JaBree Jones and a layup by Strozier before the buzzer made it 51-46 heading into the fourth quarter.

Benedict had a 59-52 lead after two free throws by Bey, but the Lady Dragons scored the next seven points to tie the game. The Lady Tigers sealed the game by making six free throws without a miss in the final 1:19.

The Lady Tigers return to action on Tuesday night, hosting Livingstone in a non-conference matchup at 6 p.m.
