COLUMBIA, S.C. –
Ay'Anna Bey, the two-time SIAC Player of the Week, continued her dominating play with her first 20-20 game of the season, scoring 26 points and grabbing a career-high 20 rebounds to help lead the Lady Tigers to a 56-46 victory over Livingstone College on Tuesday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
The Lady Tigers improved to 6-1 overall with their sixth straight win. Livingstone falls to 3-4.
Benedict struggled with some cold shooting on a cold night, making a season-low 31.4 percent of their shots (22-for-70). Livingstone was frigid in their shooting, going 16-of-62 (25.8 percent). Benedict dominated the boards, grabbing 66 rebounds, nearly double Livingstone's 34 rebounds.
Octavia Hawkins added a season-high 10 rebounds.
Andresha Smith added six points and nine rebounds, both season highs.
The game was tied 11-11 after the first quarter. Livingstone had as much as a four-point lead, 17-13, in the second quarter, but Benedict rallied to take a 23-21 lead at the half. The lead bounced back and forth in the third quarter with Livingstone's Daisa Harris scoring a buzzer-beater layup to give the Lady Blue Bears a 40-37 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Benedict scored the first nine points of the fourth quarter, getting a layup and a 3-pointer by Bey, two free throws by
JaBree Jones and a layup by
Octavia Hawkins, to take a 46-40 lead. After a Livingstone basket, the Lady Tigers scored eight straight points. Bey capped off the run with a layup to give the Lady Tigers their largest lead of the game, 54-42, with 2:19 left to play.
Benedict travels to Winston-Salem, N.C., to take part in the Red & White Classic Tournament, hosted by Winston-Salem State. Benedict takes on tournament host Winston-Salem State on Friday at 4 p.m. before taking on Virginia Union on Saturday at 2 p.m.
