WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Ayanna Armstead made five 3-pointers and scored 22 points to help lead the Benedict College Lady Tigers to a 73-62 victory over Winston-Salem State University in the Red and White Classic on Friday night.

The Lady Tigers improve to 7-1 overall with their seventh straight win. Winston-Salem State falls to 1-5.

Benedict jumped out to a 17-7 lead after the first quarter, built as much as a 16-point lead in the second quarter, then held off a late WSSU rally in the fourth quarter.

Ay'Anna Bey added 15 points. Armstead had a team-high nine rebounds.

Two free throws by Chnaireia Strozier gave Benedict a 23-7 lead with 8:07 left in the first half. The Lady Rams cut the lead to six points, 31-25, before the Lady Tigers pushed the lead back to nine points, 34-25, at the half.

Winston-Salem State cut the lead to five points in the third quarter, 48-43, but Benedict was able to answer with the next four points before the Lady Rams hit a 3-pointer to make it 52-46 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Lady Rams cut the lead to five points again in the fourth quarter, 58-53, but Benedict responded with a couple of free throws by Bey and a 3-pointer by Armstead for a 63-53 lead with 3:29 left to play.

Benedict is back in action at Winston-Salem State's Red and White Classic on Saturday, taking on undefeated and nationally 12^th-ranked Virginia Union University on Saturday at 2 p.m.
