NEWBERRY, S.C. – Newberry's Shelby Britten banked in a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift the undefeated Newberry Wolves to a 69-68 victory over the Benedict College Lady Tigers on Tuesday night.
Benedict rallied from a 64-59 deficit with 1:09 left in the game to take a 65-64 lead after a pair of
Jasmine Gholson free throws with 33 seconds left. Newberry sank a pair of free throws with 21 seconds left to retake the lead, 66-65.
Ay'Anna Bey sank a driving layup with 16 seconds left to put the Lady Tigers back on top 67-66. Newberry missed a shot with 12 seconds left and
Andresha Smith grabbed the rebound and was fouled. She made one of two from the line for a 68-66 Benedict lead with 11 seconds left.
Britten's 3-pointer banked in to beat the buzzer to give Newberry the win.
Newberry moves to 8-0 on the season. Benedict falls to 7-3.
Ayanna Armstead led the Lady Tigers with 19 points and Bey added 17 points.
Jasmine Gholson scored a season-high 15 points. Britten led Newberry with 21 points, connecting on five 3-pointers.
Benedict had a 26-25 lead at the half and grew the lead to 47-40 on a 3-pointer by Gholson in the third quarter. Newberry cut the lead to 47-46 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Lady Tigers travel to Mobile, Ala., on Monday for a conference game against Spring Hill College.
