COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College men's basketball team rallied from a 20-point deficit in the second half, but couldn't get past Newberry as the Wolves held on for an 81-73 victory in a non-conference game on Monday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
The Tigers fall to 0-8 on the season. Newberry improves to 3-5.
Newberry had a 70-50 lead with 7:14 left in the game before the Tigers rallied with 13 straight points to cut the lead to 70-63 with 2:05 on the clock after a
Romello Jones tip-in. The Wolves scored their final 11 points of the game from the free-throw line. A 3-pointer by
DeShawn Graham cut the lead to 79-73 with 18 seconds left, but that was as close as the Tigers would get.
Aaron Bryant led the Tigers with 16 points.
Jalen Stegall chipped in 13 points and
Davante Wiltshire added 11 points.
Benedict shot just 30.8 percent (24-of-78) and 19.2 percent (5-of-26) on 3-pointers. Newberry shot 48 percent (24-of-50) and 42.9 percent (12-of-28) on 3-pointers. Benedict had a decisive rebounding advantage, outrebounding the Wolves 56-37.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, taking on Virginia Union at 5 p.m.
