RALEIGH, N.C. – Benedict College rallied with five runs in the sixth inning to win the first game and split a doubleheader with Saint Augustine's on Wednesday in non-conference softball action.
Benedict rallied for an 8-6 victory in the first game. St. Augustine's jumped out to an early lead in the second game and went on to take a 9-4 victory. Benedict moves to 6-2 on the season, while Saint Augustine's goes to 2-2.
The Lady Tigers were trailing 5-2 heading to the sixth inning, when they took advantage of three errors by the Lady Falcons.
Brianna Billie had a two-run double to left field to cut the lead to 5-4. With the bases loaded and one out,
Taylor Roberts hit a sharp grounder through the right side of the infield to score Billie and
Khayreyah Parrish to take a 6-5 lead.
Erika Dargan later scored on a groundout for a 7-5 lead.
Torcealon Kelly added an RBI triple in the seventh inning to score Benedict's eighth run.
Cherica Pye went the distance to pick up the pitching win. She gave up nine hits, walked two and struck out four.
In the second game, Saint Augustine's scored two runs in the first and two more in the third for a 4-0 lead. Benedict got a run in the fourth inning when Dargan scored. With the bases loaded,
De'Maya Davis stole second,
Sharik Woods was thrown out at third base, but Dargan was able to score safely from third.
The Lady Falcons scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 7-1 lead. Benedict scored two runs in the fifth as Billie scored on a groundout by Roberts and Woods followed with an RBI single.
Benedict's final run came in the seventh inning when Davis hit a two-out single to score Roberts.
Woods was 3-for-3 at the plate to lead Benedict in the second game.
Benedict travels to Spartanburg Methodist Junior College on Friday before returning home to take on Winston-Salem State next Tuesday.
