ALBANY, Ga. – The Benedict College baseball team scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to rally past the Albany State Golden Rams and take a 9-8 victory on Sunday in the final game of their conference weekend series.
The Tigers never led in the contest until the ninth inning. Trailing 8-7 going into the final frame,
Andrew McCoy led off with a single and
Armando Valentin hit a double to right field to score McCoy and tie the game.
Christopher Harper later brought home Valentin with a sacrifice fly for the winning run.
Ricardo Pagan got out of a two-on, one-out jam in the bottom of the ninth to clinch the victory.
Benedict improves to 9-9 overall and 3-3 in the SIAC. Albany State drops to 11-12 overall and 3-3 in the SIAC.
The Golden Rams jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter. The Tigers got a two-run homer by
Joseph Macaluso in the fourth inning. Albany State added two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Benedict tied the game with three runs in the top of the fifth.
Bradon O'Connor had an RBI double. An Albany State error later allowed O'Connor to score and Valetin stole home to tie the game.
Albany State scored a single run in the fifth, sixth and seventh inning for an 8-5 lead. Benedict added two runs in the eighth on a RBI single by
Skyler Sabado and a groundout by
Fate Young.
The Tigers will play a doubleheader against Bluefield State College on Tuesday at Victory Christian High School in Charlotte, N.C., starting at 2 p.m.
