COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Claflin Panthers pounded out 16 hits and took advantage of four Benedict errors to take a 14-3 victory over the Tigers on Sunday at Tiger Field in their final home game of the season.
The Tigers fall to 17-17 overall and 7-9 in the SIAC. Claflin improves to 15-26 overall and 11-4 in the SIAC.
Benedict and Claflin were scheduled to play the third game in the series on Monday at Spirit Communications Park. That game has been cancelled due to the forecast of heavy rain on Monday.
Claflin scored two runs in the first, three more in the second, and one in the top of the fourth for a 6-0 lead. Benedict got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth when
Christopher Harper led off with a solo homer.
Armando Valentin singled, stole second and came home on a single by
Myles Snype.
The Panthers added three more runs in the fifth and another run in the sixth for a 10-2 lead. Claflin scored four more runs in the seventh to push the lead to 14-2. Benedict added a third run in the bottom of the ninth when Snype doubled, stole third, and came home on a sacrifice fly by
Skyler Sabado.
Benedict will travel to take on Miles College for a three-game series in Fairfield, Ala., starting on Friday to wrap up the regular season.
