ALBANY, Ga. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers rallied from an 0-2 deficit to defeat LeMoyne-Owen College 3-2 and secure their first SIAC victory of the season on Thursday afternoon in the SIAC Crossover Tournament.
Kiera Brothers had a season-high 22 kills, while
V'Aira Harris had a double-double with 14 kills and 23 digs. Freshman
Ashleigh Reeves recorded a season-high 44 assists.
Benedict beat LeMoyne-Owen by set scores of 18-25, 17-25, 27-25, 25-22, 15-8. Earlier in the day, Benedict fell in its first two matches at the SIAC Crossover, falling to Tuskegee 3-0 and Kentucky State 3-0.
Against LeMoyne-Owen, the Magicians took a 2-0 lead after winning the first two sets 25-18 and 25-17. The match turned in the third set when the Lady Tigers rallied from a 10-4 deficit to take a 16-14 lead on a kill by Brothers. Benedict had set point at 24-23, but LeMoyne-Owen scored the next two points to take a 25-24 lead and was serving for set point. The Lady Tigers tied the set with a kill by Brothers, then closed out the set with another kill by Brothers and a kill by
Adrionna Washington.
LeMoyne-Owen had a 21-20 lead late in the fourth set when Benedict scored five of the final six points in the set, with Harris scoring the final point with a kill to tie the set at 2-2. Benedict raced out to a 9-3 lead in the deciding fifth set and Harris closed out the set with a pair of kills.
Benedict continues play in the SIAC Crossover Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
