Lady Tigers Drop Volleyball Match To Johnson C. Smith, 3-1

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Benedict College volleyball team dropped the second half of a home-and-home series against Johnson C. Smith University, falling 3-1 on Wednesday night.

Johnson C. Smith won the match 25-21, 25-7, 19-25, 25-16 to improve to 2-4 on the season. Benedict falls to 0-2 with its second loss to the Golden Bulls in less than a week.

Benedict had a negative hitting percentage for the match, hitting -.066. The Lady Tigers had more errors (28) than kills (21). JCSU hit .130 for the match.

V'Aira Harris led the Lady Tigers with eight kills. Alia Gomez had 22 digs and Ashleigh Reeves recorded 12 assists.

The Golden Bulls had two players in double-figure kills, with Gorana Bogdanovic scoring 13 kills and Karizma Brooks notching 10 kills. Cydney Calhoun had 21 assists and Joi Haywood recorded 16 assists. Georgina Diaz notched 21 digs.

Benedict had a 9-5 lead in the first set when Johnson C. Smith scored the next six points for an 11-9 lead. A five-point run later in the set gave the Golden Bulls a 20-14 lead. Benedict cut the lead to 22-21, but JCSU closed out the set with the final three points, including the set winner on a service ace.

Benedict had a 6-4 lead early in the second set when Johnson C. Smith scored the next five points to take the lead. Aaliyah Lawson scored a kill for the Lady Tigers to make it 9-7, but the Golden Bulls reeled off the next 16 consecutive points for the win.

The Lady Tigers regrouped in the third set, notching seven kills and taking advantage of 14 attack errors by JCSU for the 25-19 win.

The fourth set saw the Lady Tigers jump out to a quick 5-1 lead and had an 8-6 lead before JCSU scored four straight points to take the lead and then had a 9-0 run for a 19-9 lead.

Benedict travels back to Charlotte on Thursday night to take on Johnson & Wales University.
