COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College men's basketball team was busy over the holiday break giving back to the community.
The players and coaching staff volunteered with the non-profit organization Families Helping Families over the break, wrapping gifts, giving out toys and bringing smiles to the faces of some of less fortunate.
This is their first time giving back in the Columbia, South Carolina area under the new coaching staff, but something new Head Coach
Artis Maddox is looking forward to doing every year.
"I'm a person that is big on family and it's a wonderful feeling when you're blessed to have the opportunity to share the gift of giving with someone else, especially around this time of the year," Maddox said. "It makes it more special to have our student-athletes see first-hand how giving back can bring so many smiles. It's a lesson that can't be taught on the court but you have to get into the community to learn it."
The Families Helping Families organization was also appreciative of the help provided by the Benedict team. "These young men really came in and were a delight to work with while their time spent volunteering is something we'll never forget. We support and appreciate Benedict College and their men's basketball team," said Susan Myer.
Benedict College men's basketball team next hits the court at Limestone on Wednesday.
