AUGUSTA, Ga. –
Mahogany Randall hit a free throw with two seconds left as the Benedict College Lady Tigers rallied from an eight-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat Paine College 79-78 on Saturday in a SIAC women's basketball contest.
Ay'Anna Bey led the Lady Tigers with 31 points and 11 rebounds, her fifth game of 30 or more points and her 11
th double-double of the season.
The Lady Tigers improve to 14-4 on the season and 9-0 in the SIAC. Paine falls to 1-15 overall and 1-8 in the SIAC.
Benedict jumped out to an early lead, taking a 22-11 lead in the first quarter before Paine closed the gap to 26-21 at the end of the quarter. The Lady Tigers had a 35-28 lead with 5:08 left in the second quarter when Paine closed out the first half with a 20-7 run to take a 48-42 lead at the half.
Paine increased the lead to as much as 12 points in the third quarter, 59-47, but the Lady Tigers were able to close the gap to 61-58 heading into the fourth quarter. The Lady Lions pushed the lead back to 71-63 with 4:56 left in the game. The Lady Tigers scored the next eight points with Bey doing all the damage on a pair of three-point plays and a fast-break layup to tie the game at 71.
Two free throws by Bey with 24 seconds left gave Benedict a 78-76 lead. Paine tied the game with a pair of free throws with 16 seconds left. Randall was fouled with two seconds left and hit the first of two free throws.
Randall finished with 13 points, while
Essence Stinnette added 11 points.
Benedict returns to action next Saturday with a road trip to Albany State for a 1 p.m. contest.
