COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers scored just one field goal in the third quarter as Claflin rallied to take a 70-60 victory in a non-conference women's basketball game on Thursday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Benedict falls to 16-5 on the season. Claflin improves to 12-10.
The Lady Tigers had a 37-25 lead at the half. Claflin outscored Benedict 11-1 over the first 7:24 of the third quarter to cut the lead to 38-36.
Ay'Anna Bey scored Benedict's only field goal of the period with 48 seconds left and added a free throw with 24 seconds left to give Benedict a 45-42 lead heading into the final period.
Benedict saw a five-point lead in the fourth quarter disappear as Claflin pulled away with a 15-4 run late in the final quarter.
Bey led the Lady Tigers with 16 points and grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds.
Jasmine Gholson added 12 points on four 3-pointers, while
Essence Barnes-Jordan scored a season-high 10 points.
The Lady Tigers shot 30.9 percent for the game, including 17.2 percent (5-of-29) in the second half as Claflin outscored Benedict 45-23 in the second half.
Benedict returns to conference action on Saturday to take on Paine College at 1 p.m.
