Newberry Edges Benedict Lady Tigers, 60-59

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers suffered their first loss of the season to Newberry College on Tuesday night as Kelsey McDermott hit a 3-pointer with seven seconds left to give the Wolves a 60-59 non-conference women's basketball victory.

Benedict falls to 2-1 overall. Newberry improves to 2-1 on the season.

Ay'Anna Bey led the Lady Tigers with 29 points and 14 rebounds. Camryn Bostick added eight points and nine rebounds, while Shanassia White contributed with 13 rebounds and five assists.

Defense was dominate for both teams throughout the first half as both teams struggled to score points. Benedict took an early lead in the first quarter, jumping up 14-8 after one quarter. Newberry would battle back in the second quarter to tie the game, 22-22, heading into halftime.

The Lady Tigers retook the lead at the beginning of the second half and seemed to be controlling the tempo. Benedict extended their lead in the third quarter to as much as eight, 36-28 with 4:46 to play after a 3-pointer by Jasmine Gholson.

The Lady Tigers took a game-high nine-point lead, 50-41, with 7:18 remaining in the fourth quarter after a three-point play by Bey. Newberry outscored Benedict 11-4 in the final five minutes of regulation to take a one point lead, which would be enough to secure the win.

Benedict outscored Newberry 34-20 in the paint. The Wolves outscored the Lady Tigers 19-8 in points off turnovers. Newberry's bench also outscored the Lady Tigers' bench 39-7.

Benedict will host Palm Beach Atlantic University on Friday at 5:30 p.m. in the HRC Arena.
