SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers stayed alive in the SIAC Volleyball Championship on Tuesday, splitting a pair of matches. Benedict fell to Spring Hill College 3-0, then defeated Paine College 3-0 in the Upward Star Center.
Against Spring Hill College, Benedict lost the match 25-17, 25-18, 25-14. In the second game, the Lady Tigers defeated Paine College 25-17, 26-24, 25-20 to clinch a spot in the final four of the SIAC Volleyball Tournament.
V'Aira Harris led the Lady Tigers with 20 total kills on the day. Adrionna Washington added 19 kills, while Ashleigh Reeves contributed with 21 digs and 56 assists on the day as well.
In the first match, Benedict held their own, staying close to begin every set. Spring Hill would be too much for the Lady Tigers to handle, defeating them in straight sets.
In the second match, Paine tied the score up at 6-6 at the beginning of the first set. Benedict would then go on a 9-0 run, led by Harris and Kayla Stephens, to take a 15-6 lead. The Lady Tigers would hold on to win the set.
In the second set, Benedict took a late 24-20 lead off a kill by Washington. Paine College would score four unanswered points to tie up the score. Two errors by the Lions would allow Benedict to win the set.
A 5-0 run gave Benedict a 21-14 lead in the third set after a pair of kills from Harris. Another kill by Harris ended the set and secured a spot in the final four.
Benedict will play Kentucky State University at 10 a.m. at the Upward Bound Center in Spartanburg, S.C. A win would knock out the Thorobreds and advance the Lady Tigers to a match against Albany State at 1 p.m. A win in this game would advance Benedict to the SIAC Volleyball Championship against Spring Hill College.
