FRANKFORT, Ky. – Kentucky State outscored Benedict 12-9 in overtime to take a 78-75 victory in a SIAC men's basketball game on Monday night.
Benedict falls to 4-7 overall and 1-3 in the SIAC. Kentucky State improves to 5-5 overall and 2-1 in the SIAC.
The Tigers used an 8-1 run in the second half to cut a six-point deficit to a one-point lead, 51-50, after a 3-pointer by
Anthony Gomes. The Thorobreds pulled ahead 60-53 with 4:25 left in regulation, but the Tigers scored the next nine points, getting a layup by
Aboubacar Camara to give Benedict a 62-60 advantage with 1:52 remaining.
Romello Jones hit a pair of free throws with 49 seconds on the clock for a 66-63 lead. Kentucky State's Orlando Fikes hit a 3-pointer with four seconds on the clock to tie the game and send the contest to overtime.
In overtime, the Thorobreds scored the first six points of the extra period for a 72-66 lead. KSU had a 76-68 lead with 1:42 remaining, but the Tigers rallied to cut the lead to 77-75 with 43 seconds left on a pair of free throws by
Tyrese Mapp. Benedict missed three shots in the final 18 seconds, and the Thorobreds sealed the game with a free throw with 15 seconds left.
Joseph Staton led the Tigers with 19 point.
Tajh Green added 10 points.
Benedict is back in action on Saturday, with a home conference game against Lane College at 3 p.m.
