COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers had a 21-point lead heading into the fourth quarter and held off a late rally by Albany State to remain undefeated in SIAC play with a 63-58 victory on Saturday afternoon.
Ay'Anna Bey led the Lady Tigers, now 18-5 overall and 13-0 in the SIAC, with 21 points and 16 rebounds, her seventh consecutive double-double and 15
th double-double of the season. Bey leads the SIAC in scoring and is second in rebounding.
Ayanna Armstead added 15 points and pulled down nine rebounds.
Octavia Hawkins chipped in with 11 points.
Benedict held a 23-15 lead at the end of the first quarter. Albany State came back to briefly take the lead, 31-29, in the second quarter before the Lady Tigers scored the final 11 points of the first half to take a 40-31 lead at the break. A 3-pointer by Armstead gave Benedict a 59-37 lead.
Albany State outscored Benedict 20-4 in the fourth quarter, scoring the first nine points of the period. After Bey made a pair of free throws, the Lady Golden Rams went on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 61-55 with 1:14 left in the game. Albany State got a 3-pointer to make it 62-58 with 20 seconds remaining. Bey closed out the game with a free throw with three seconds on the clock.
Benedict will play its final home game of the season on Monday against Fort Valley State at 5:30 p.m.
