AUGUSTA, Ga. – Paine College swept a baseball doubleheader over Benedict College on Monday to take the four-game conference series 3-1.
Paine won Monday's games 11-10 and 7-4. On Saturday, the two teams played in Aiken, with Benedict winning the first game 9-4 before Paine took the second game 10-1.
Benedict falls to 14-15 overall and 9-8 in the SIAC. Paine improves to 8-23-1 overall and 3-11 in the SIAC.
Paine scored five runs in the sixth inning to rally for the win in the first game on Monday. The Lions got an RBI triple, a two-run home run and then scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch.
Javier Santiago had a two-run homer for the Tigers and drove in three total runs.
Joseph Macaluso had an RBI double, and
Christopher Harper had a two-run double.
In the second game, Benedict took a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning as
Anthony Johnson had an RBI single,
Michael Garner drove home a run on a sacrifice fly, and Johnson stole home. Paine pulled ahead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth and added three more runs in the fifth.
On Friday, the two teams met in Aiken at USC Aiken's field due to Paine's waterlogged field. The Tigers got a three-run homer from Harper, and RBI singles from
Bradon O'Connor and Macaluso in the 9-4 victory.
Ricardo Pagan picked up the win on the mound, allowing just three hits over five innings of work. Benedict was held to just five hits in the 10-1 loss. Johnson had the only RBI on a bases-loaded walk.
Benedict travels to Sumter on Friday for a non-conference doubleheader against Morris. The Tigers will play their final home game on April 24 against USC Beaufort.
