COLUMBIA, S.C. – Albany State outscored the Benedict College Tigers 13-6 in overtime as the Golden Rams took an 87-80 victory in a SIAC men's basketball game on Monday night in the HRC Arena.
Benedict falls to 7-11 overall and 4-6 in the SIAC. Albany State improves to 11-8 overall and 8-2 in the SIAC.
Deon Joyner led the way for the Tigers with 23 points and 10 rebounds. 
Malachi McCoy added a season-high 21 points, shooting an amazing 10-of-11 from the floor. 
Anthony Gomes contributed with 18 points, knocking down three 3-point shots.
The entire first half saw both teams going back and forth as there were a total of nine lead changes. After Albany State retook the lead, 29-28, with 1:26 remaining until the break, back-to-back jumpers from 
Tyrese Mapp and McCoy put the Tigers on top 32-29 at the half.
A 20-10 run by the Golden Rams to begin the second half put Albany State on top, 49-42, with 13:23 remaining in regulation. Benedict would answer with a 15-5 run to take back the lead 57-54 off 11 points from Gomes.
The Tigers extended their lead to as much as eight points with 6:06 remaining in the game. A 12-5 run by Albany State closed the gap to one, 72-71, with 32 seconds remaining in regulation. 
NyQuan McCombs knocked down two free throws to extend the Benedict lead to three with 19 seconds left. Napoleon Harris converted on a three-point play with nine seconds left to send the game to overtime.
Albany State began overtime jumping out to a four-point lead with 3:23 remaining. The Tigers would fight back to tie the game at 78-78 off a layup by Joyner. The Golden Rams finished overtime on a 9-2 run to defeat the Tigers.
Benedict's bench outscored Albany State 43-13, however the Golden Rams outshot the Tigers 24-of 29 (82.8 percent) to 15-of-25 (60 percent) from the free throw line.
Benedict will host rival Claflin University in a non-conference showdown on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in HRC Arena. The Tigers have lost their last three meetings with the Panthers.
