SAVANNAH, Ga – Savannah State outscored the Benedict College Tigers 23-13 in the second overtime to take a 108-98 victory in a SIAC men's basketball game on Saturday afternoon in a game that saw a total of 206 points scored.
Deon Joyner led the Tigers with 27 points.
Malachi McCoy contributed with 17 points and 13 rebounds.
Tyrese Mapp put forth a double-double with 13 points and a career high 17 rebounds on the contest.
Joyner scored nine of the first 11 points for the Tigers to help Benedict take an early 11-8 lead with 14:34 remaining in the half. After Savannah State took a 20-16 lead with 11:27 left, the Tigers went on a 17-3 run to take a 33-23 advantage with 5:35 remaining until the break. Benedict continued the solid play, holding a 42-35 lead heading into halftime.
Savannah State started the second half on a 10-2 run to retake a 45-44 lead after two minutes. Joyner then scored 10 of the next 14 Benedict points to give the Tigers a 58-52 advantage with 9:33 remaining in regulation.
After taking a 69-62 lead with 3:52 left in the game, Savannah State retook the lead, 72-71, with 1:58 remaining. A 3-pointer by
Anthony Gomes put Benedict back on top, 74-72, with 41 seconds left. Marcus Scott of Savannah State knocked down a 3-pointer as time expired to send the game into the first overtime.
Benedict scored the first two baskets in overtime to take a 79-75 lead with 4:05 remaining. An 8-0 run by Savannah State allowed them to retake the lead, 83-79, with 1:55 left in overtime. Gomes then hit two free throws and a jumper to tie the game at 83 with 59 seconds left.
With 15 seconds remaining in overtime, Savannah State missed the front end of a one-and-one, allowing
Joseph Staton to knock down a huge jump shot with seven seconds left to send it into double overtime.
Benedict ran out of steam in the second overtime getting outscored 23-13.
Benedict will have a week off before returning to action against Clark Atlanta University at 3 p.m. on February 1 inside the HRC Arena.
