SAVANNAH, Ga – The Benedict College Lady Tigers' bench proved to be too much for Savannah State, outscoring them 66-8, and took a 92-62 SIAC victory on Saturday afternoon.
Benedict improves to 18-2 overall, stretching their winning streak to 13, and 9-1 in the SIAC. Savannah State drops to 9-5 overall and 4-5 in the SIAC.
Shanassia White led the Lady Tigers with a season-high 19 points, while knocking down five 3-pointers. White also added seven rebounds and five assists.
Ay'Anna Bey contributed with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while
Ayanna Armstead hit four 3-pointers en route to an 18-point effort.
After
Mahogany Randall knocked down a 3-point shot to start the game, Savannah State went on a 9-0 run to take a 9-3 lead three minutes into the game. This would not last as White hit back-to-back 3-point field goals to tie the score at 9-9. Benedict went on a 7-0 run to end the first quarter and take a 23-18 lead.
White scored eight of her 19 points in the second quarter to help the Lady Tigers outscore Savannah State 23-15 and take a 46-33 lead heading into the break. Benedict continued their strong defense in the third quarter, holding Savannah State to 4-of-21 (19 percent) shooting. The Lady Tigers took a 68-47 lead after three quarters. In the final 3:15 of the game, Benedict outscored Savannah State 13-3 to clinch the victory.
The Lady Tigers outrebounded Savannah State 56-40 and outscored them 30-13 on second-chance points.
Benedict has a week off before returning to action against Clark Atlanta University on February 1 at 1 p.m. inside the HRC Arena.
