Tigers Have Tough Test Against Albany State

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict Tigers return home after last week's big win over Miles College to take on the Albany State Golden Rams. Kickoff at Charlie W. Johnson Stadium is 2 p.m.

The game will be streamed live here. Live stats are available here.

The Tigers with their high-powered offense will face their toughest task in the Golden Rams, who rank as one of the nation's best defenses.

Benedict comes into the game with a 3-3 overall record (0-2 SIAC) and host the Golden Rams, 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the SIAC. The Tigers boast a powerful offense that averages 31.5 points per game and nearly 400 yards of total offense. Benedict ranks second in the SIAC in scoring and third in total offense.

That offensive output will be challenged by the Golden Rams, who have allowed just 6 points per game, ranking first in the SIAC and nationally in D2 in points allowed. Over the past three games, the Golden Rams have outscored their opponents 110-3. They have registered three shutouts in their six games, and their only loss this season was to fourth-ranked Valdosta State.

"They're a good football team. They have a really good defense," said Benedict head coach Chennis Berry. "They get after it. They haven't given up very many touchdowns at all. But our men are excited about the challenge. We'll have a good plan on offense, our defense will have a good plan and our special teams will have a good plan. We'll get 60 minutes to see what the outcome will be."

Benedict inserted freshman quarterback Zavien Foster into the lineup last week and he came up big, completing 13-of-27 passes for 157 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. He also led the Tigers in rushing with 90 yards on 15 carries with one rushing touchdown. For his efforts, he was named the SIAC Newcomer of the Week.

On offense, the Golden Rams average 321 yards per game, with a good balance between the run (165.5) and the air (155.5). Running  back Marcuis Fulks leads the ground attack with 66.5 yards per game and seven touchdowns. Quarterback Dionte Bonneau threw for 283 yards and three touchdowns in last week's 30-0 win over Edward Waters.

"We'll be prepared. Our young men are chomping at the bit," said Benedict head coach Chennis Berry. "It's a big challenge for us, but our guys will be ready to go."
