FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers swept past Fort Valley State, 3-0, in a SIAC women's volleyball match on Friday night.
Benedict won the match 25-15, 25-16, 25-23 to improve to 10-7 overall and 5-4 in the SIAC. Fort Valley State falls to 5-11 overall and 1-9 in the SIAC.
The Lady Tigers won the first two sets easily and then rallied in the third set to win the match in three sets. Benedict got off to a fast start, building a 15-5 lead in the first set.
Kiera Brothers clinched the set with a service ace. An eight-point run early in the second set gave Benedict a big 9-4 lead. The Lady Wildcats rallied to cut the lead to 15-14, but the Lady Tigers outscored Fort Valley State 10-2 the rest of the way to put the second set in the books. Benedict scored the final five points, with four of those points coming off Fort Valley State errors.
The third set was close and tied at 10-10, before Benedict pulled ahead 18-14 as
Brikyia Benjamin closed the run with a kill and an ace. Fort Valley State came back to take a 20-19 lead and had a 23-20 lead after a pair of Benedict errors. But the Lady Tigers scored the final five points, getting a pair of kills by
Cana Smith, to clinch the third set and the match.
Smith led Benedict with 12 kills, and
Jade Hollins had a career-high 24 assists.
Amber Scott led the defense with nine digs.
Benedict is back in action on Wednesday with a home match against Savannah State, starting at 6 p.m.
