WINTER PARK, Fla. – Florida Tech outscored Benedict 10-3 over the final two minutes to defeat the Tigers 72-66 on Saturday afternoon in the South Region Tipoff Tournament at Rollins College.
The Tigers, now 0-2 on the season, had a 39-34 lead after a jumper by
Tyrese Mapp with 17:06 left to play. Florida Tech scored the next seven points to take the lead and the game went back-and-forth the rest of the way.
A 3-pointer by
Brandon Smith gave Benedict a 58-53 lead with six minutes left to play. Florida Tech went on a 9-0 run to take a 62-58 lead with 3:54 left to play. A 3-pointer by
Timothy Bing Jr. and a layup by
Malachi McCoy gave Benedict a 63-62 lead with 2:02 on the clock.
Florida Tech scored the next five points and held on for the win.
Bing led Benedict with 19 points and six assists.
Tajh Green had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Smith added 11 points and Mapp chipped in with 10 points.
Benedict returns to action on Tuesday with the home opener against Shaw University at 7:30 p.m.
