Lady Tigers Top Savannah State, Stay Alive In SIAC Volleyball Tournament

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Benedict College women's volleyball team stayed alive in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament with a 3-2 victory over Savannah State on Monday afternoon in the Rock Hill Sports & Events Center.

Benedict dropped to the loser's bracket with a 3-0 loss to Kentucky State in the opening round.

The Lady Tigers will play at 1 p.m. on Tuesday and will face the loser from a 10 a.m. match between Albany State and Central State.

Against Savannah State, Jordan Reeves led the Lady Tigers with 12 kills and also had a team-high 18 digs, while Cana Smith added 11 digs and Brikyia Benjamin added 10 kills. Ashleigh Reeves recorded 38 assists and added 10 digs. Kaiah Green had nine kills and five blocks. Benedict won the match by scores of 20-25, 25-14, 20-25, 25-12, 15-7.

In the first set, the score was tied 18-18 when Savannah State scored three points in a row. A kill by Benjamin cut the lead to 22-20, but Savannah State scored the final three points to take the first set.

The Lady Tigers used a seven-point run in the second set to take a 16-8 lead. Benedict closed out the set with the final three points, including a service ace by Benjamin.

Benedict had a 19-18 lead in the third set before Savannah State closed out the set by scoring seven of the final eight points.

Benedict scored the first seven points of the fourth set and kept the pressure going, taking leads of 13-2, 18-4 and 21-5. Green closed out the set with a kill.

The Lady Tigers carried that momentum into the deciding fifth set, scoring the first four points on kills by Daija Walton and Smith, and two service aces by Jordan Reeves. Savannah State cut the lead to 7-5, but the Lady Tigers scored the next seven points for match point. Savannah State scored the next two points, but a Savannah State attack error closed out the match.

In the opening round matchup against Kentucky State, Benedict hit just .104 and recorded just 22 kills. Walton led Benedict with seven kills.
