COLUMBIA, S.C. – Wykira Johnson-Kelly scored eight points in overtime to help lead the Benedict College Lady Tigers to a 77-69 victory over Fayetteville State University in a non-conference game on Wednesday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Benedict had a 15-point lead early in the fourth quarter, only to see the Lady Broncos rally to take a 64-62 lead with 19 seconds left in regulation. Keondra Archie scored on a driving layup with three seconds left to tie the score at 64 and send the game into overtime.
In overtime, Johnson-Kelly hit a 3-pointer to give the Lady Tigers a 68-65 lead, and then followed with another 3-pointer with 1:43 left to play for a 71-67 lead. After a Fayetteville State miss, Johnson-Kelly scored again to give Benedict a 73-67 lead with 29 seconds left to play.
Ay'Anna Bey led Benedict with 20 points. Johnson-Kelly finished with 16 points, nine rebounds, four assists and five steals. Keondra Archie also had a strong game with 14 points and a Benedict career-high 16 rebounds. Ayanna Armstead connected on three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points.
Benedict improves to 5-3 overall with its third straight win. Fayetteville State falls to 2-4, dropping its second straight game in overtime.
The Lady Tigers will travel to Orangeburg to take on Claflin in another non-conference contest at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.
