COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers snapped their three-game losing streak, honored three seniors and celebrated last season's SIAC Championship with the presentation of championship rings on Wednesday evening, taking an 81-73 victory over Savannah State.
Playing in their final home games, Benedict's three seniors all had significant contributions to the win.
Ayanna Armstead scored a season-high 17 points, hitting three 3-pointers.
Octavia Hawkins scored a season-high 10 points.
Shanassia White added nine points while grabbing six rebounds and dishing out three assists.
Ay'Anna Bey led the Lady Tigers with 22 points and 12 rebounds.
Benedict improves to 9-3 on the season. Savannah State drops to 4-2.
Benedict jumped out to an early 14-4 lead before Savannah State rallied to take a 25-24 lead with 7:07 remaining in the second quarter. Bey scored the final four points of the first half to give Benedict a 40-35 lead at the break.
The Lady Tigers built the lead back to 10 points, 49-39, midway through the third quarter and had a 60-54 lead at the end of the quarter.
Savannah State cut the lead to 69-68 on a 3-pointer by Le'Andrea Gillis with 5:11 on the clock. With the game tied at 71 and 3:09 remaining, the Lady Tigers scored six straight points, getting four offensive rebounds during one series. A layup by
Wykira Johnson-Kelly capped off the run and gave Benedict a 77-71 lead with just 47 seconds remaining. Johnson-Kelly added 12 points for the Lady Tigers.
Bria Gibbs led Savannah State with 21 points and nine rebounds.
Benedict returns to action with a pair of road games on Friday and Saturday at Albany State.
