COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict Tigers dominated the boards to take a 92-85 victory over Allen University on Saturday afternoon in Allen's John Hurst Adams Gym.
The Tigers out-rebounded the Yellow Jackets 47-27, including grabbing 17 offensive rebounds which led to 22 second-chance points.
Benedict used a late-game surge to pull away from the Yellow Jackets and improve to 9-1 on the season. Allen falls to 6-6.
The Tigers had a 13-point lead in the second half, but the Yellow Jackets rallied to take a 72-71 lead on a 3-pointer with 8:28 to play. Benedict scored the next six points to regain the lead. Another 3-pointer for the Yellow Jackets cut the lead to 83-80 with 3:47 remaining, but Benedict answered with a jumper by
Timothy Bing Jr. Back-to-back baskets by the Tigers gave Benedict an 89-81 lead with 1:53 on the clock, and they were able to hang on for the win.
Benedict scored the final four points of the first half to take a 45-41 lead, then opened the second half with the first seven points to take a 52-41 lead. The Tigers had as much as a 13-point lead, 56-43, with 16:46 left to play.
A 3-pointer by
Brandon Beidleman gave Benedict a 68-57 lead with 12:21 left to play. The Yellow Jackets scored the next eight points to cut the lead to 68-65 with 11:04 remaining.
Tajh Green and
Tyrese Mapp scored 19 points each to lead the Tigers. Bing added 16 points and
Aboubacar Camara chipped in 10 points. Virgil Lackey led the Yellow Jackets with 25 points, while Darius Williams added 20 points.
The Tigers will now wait for the NCAA selections, which will take place at 10:30 p.m. on Sunday. Benedict was ranked eighth in the last regional rankings. Benedict, and other SIAC schools, were moved to the Southeast Region this year. Also, the tournament field has been reduced to 48 teams, with six teams selected for each region.
