Tigers Split With Clark Atlanta On Senior Day

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College baseball team wrapped up the 2021 season on Wednesday, splitting a doubleheader with Clark Atlanta on Senior Day.

The Tigers got significant contributions from their seven seniors to take a 10-8 victory in the first game. Benedict fell behind 10-0 in the second game, and staged a major comeback to get within one run at one point before losing 14-11.

Benedict finishes the Covid-19 abbreviated 2021 season with a 4-4 record. Clark Atlanta moves to 3-8.

Senior Jacob Lagos got the starting nod in the first game, pitching six strong innings, striking out eight and did not issue a walk. Senior Myquerris McGrier hit his first career home run, a solo shot to center field in the fourth inning. Senior Christopher Harper came in relief in the seventh inning, after having played shortstop the entire game, and earned the save. Senior TreVohn Jeffrey had a two-run triple in Benedict's big six-run sixth inning to take the lead. Bradon O'Connor had six stolen bases on the day to push him over 100 for his Tiger career. Christian Moore scored a run, and Murrell Martin filled in at catcher.

Clark Atlanta took a 6-0 lead after the first two and a half innings. Anthony Johnson hit a two-run double in the bottom of the third to put the Tigers on the board. In the fourth, McGrier homered and O'Connor doubled, stole third and came home on an error to make it 6-4.

Clark Atlanta added a run in the top of the sixth to take a 7-4 lead. The Tigers scored six runs in the sixth inning on just two hits and three Clark Atlanta errors.

In the second game, the Panthers took a 10-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. Benedict put up four runs in the bottom of the fourth as Moore had an RBI single, Ryan Chesney had an RBI single, and Harper had an RBI double. O'Connor scored another run in the fifth and Chesney followed with a solo homer to make it 10-6.

Clark Atlanta added two more runs in the top of the sixth for a 12-6 lead. The Tigers scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 12-11. Chesney had a two-run single.

The Panthers added two more runs in the seventh to close out the game at 14-11.
