SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Benedict College softball team scored 13 unanswered runs to rally past Savannah State and take a 13-5 victory in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday afternoon.
Savannah State used a pair of big innings to take a 9-7 victory in the second game. Benedict wraps up the 2021 season with a 10-6 record. Savannah State ends the season at 11-6.
Savannah State took a 5-0 lead after three innings in the first contest. Benedict used a six-run fourth inning to take the lead and never looked back.
Daisha Mitchell led off the inning with a walk and later scored on a single by
Deyonce Lewis.
Taylor McNeal singled and later scored on a passed ball. Lewis scored on an error.
Zanila Booker walked and later scored on an error.
Deneisha Wooten walked and later scored the tying run on a passed ball.
Chesney Miller brought home Wooten on a groundout for the go-ahead run.
Benedict added two more runs in the fifth as Miller and
Brianna Crosby each had RBI singles with the bases loaded. Booker added a two-run double in the sixth to make it 10-5. In the seventh,
Rainah Khan drove home a run with an infield single, then Lewis hit a deep single to center field with the bases loaded to drive home two runs.
Lewis earned the pitching win to move to 8-2 on the season. She struck out three and did not allow a walk.
In the second game, the Lady Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning as Booker had an RBI single and later scored on a groundout, then Wooten scored on a wild pitch. An RBI single by Crosby in the third inning put Benedict ahead 4-0.
Savannah State took the lead in the bottom of the third with five runs on three hits, three walks, a hit batsman and a wild pitch. SSU added four runs in the fourth inning, thanks to a two-run homer.
Benedict trimmed the lead to 9-6 with two runs in the fifth inning. Booker led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a single and error by Wooten. Wooten later scored on a sacrifice fly by Miller. An RBI single by Wooten in the sixth closed out the scoring at 9-7.
