ATLANTA – The Morehouse Maroon Tigers snapped Benedict's 10-game winning streak and handed the Tigers their first SIAC loss with an 86-79 victory on Saturday.
Benedict shot a cold 35 percent from the floor and 26 percent from 3-point range. The Tigers fall to 11-4 overall and 7-1 in the SIAC. Morehouse moves to 10-6 overall and 7-2 in the SIAC.
Tajh Green led Benedict with 20 points and 11 rebounds.
Marshaun West added 13 points off the bench.
Brandon Smith added 12 points and
Timothy Bing Jr. chipped in 10 points.
Benedict had a 47-45 lead at the half, but Morehouse built as much as an eight-point lead, 61-53, with 14:29 left in the game. Benedict rallied to retake the lead on a pair of
Brandon Smith free throws and a layup by
Malachi McCoy for a 65-61 lead with 9:13 on the clock.
A free throw by
Tyrese Mapp tied the game at 71 with 5:03 left to play, but Morehouse hit a 3-pointer to take the lead and never trailed again. Morehouse outscored Benedict 15-8 over the final five minutes. A free throw by Green cut the lead to 78-77 with 1:57 remaining, but Morehouse scored their final eight points from the free-throw line, and Benedict connected on three of their final 10 shots.
Benedict is back in action on Monday at Albany State.
