COLUMBIA, S.C. – Augusta University closed out the first quarter with nine unanswered points to take the lead and went on to take a 60-49 victory over Benedict College in a non-conference women's basketball game on Tuesday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Benedict falls to 2-3 on the season with their third straight loss. Augusta improves to 4-0.
The Lady Tigers had an 8-4 lead after a 3-pointer by
Jasmine Gholson with 6:28 left in the first quarter. The Lady Jags scored the final nine points of the quarter for a 13-8 lead. Augusta had as much as an 11-point lead in the second quarter, 26-15, but Benedict cut the lead to four points, 28-24, after a 3-pointer by
Jazmin Grayson. Augusta pushed the lead back to 10 points at the end of the quarter, 34-24.
Another 3-pointer by Grayson got the Lady Tigers to within three points in the fourth quarter, 50-47, but Augusta scored the next eight points, and Benedict scored just two points over the final 6:21.
Mahogany Randall led Benedict with 12 points, while
Emiya Gallman had a career-high 11 points.
Benedict is back in action on Saturday with a road trip to Lane College in Jackson, Tenn., to begin SIAC play.
