COLUMBIA, S.C. – Benedict's
Taylor Christmas scored five points in overtime to help lead the Lady Tigers to a 68-64 victory over Kentucky State, snapping their six-game losing streak on Monday night.
Kentucky State was leading 61-60 in overtime when Christmas scored a layup to give the Lady Tigers the lead for good. After Kentucky State missed a pair of free throws, Christmas scored again for a 64-61 lead with 1:35 left in the game.
Mahogany Randall added two more free throws, then Christmas hit one free throw to cap off Benedict's 7-0 run in overtime with 26 seconds remaining.
Benedict improves to 3-6 overall and 1-3 in the SIAC. Kentucky State falls to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the SIAC.
Christmas finished with 17 points, 14 in the second half and overtime. Randall also had 17 points.
Benedict had as much as a seven-point lead, 49-42, early in the fourth quarter, but the Thorobreds scored the final four points of the quarter to send the game into overtime.
Benedict used a 10-0 run in the first quarter to pull away from a tie game for a 14-4 lead. The Lady Tigers had a 16-10 lead at the end of the quarter and a 27-22 lead at the half. The Thorobreds hit a 3-pointer at the third quarter buzzer to cut the lead to 44-42 heading into the fourth quarter.
Benedict will play its final game before the Christmas break on Dec. 15 at Miles College.
