COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College baseball team opened the 2022 season with a home doubleheader against Glenville State College, and dropped both games.
Glenville State won the first game 17-2 as the Pioneers hit a pair of home runs, and four Benedict pitchers surrendered 12 hits, walked seven and had five wild pitches, while the Tigers committed seven errors. In the second game, Glenville State hit three home runs, and four Benedict pitchers combined to give up 11 hits, seven walks, three wild pitches and four hit batters. Benedict committed three more errors.
The Pioneers (2-0) opened the first game with five runs in the first inning. Benedict (0-2) picked up a run in the bottom of the first when
Bradon O'Connor scored on a single by
Jalen McDuffie. Glenville State added three runs in the third on a three-run homer, then added two more runs in the sixth for a 10-1 lead. Benedict added a run in the bottom of the sixth. The Pioneers pushed across seven more runs in the seventh.
In the second game, Glenville State jumped out with seven runs in the second inning thanks to a three-run homer. The Pioneers scored two more runs in the fourth for a 9-0 lead, then added a solo home run in the fifth. Benedict avoided the shutout with a run in the sixth when
Shamon Thompson led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a single by
Jamell Mitchell Jr., and came home on a stolen base.
Benedict and Glenville State will play another doubleheader on Sunday, with the first game starting at 11 a.m.
