SAVANNAH, Ga. –
Timothy Bing Jr. hit two of four free throws in the final 22 seconds of overtime to help the Benedict College Tigers take a 60-58 victory over Savannah State on Monday night.
Savannah State missed a 3-pointer at the end and the Tigers held on for the victory to improve to 18-5 overall and 13-2 in the SIAC. Savannah State falls to 9-11 overall and 6-7 in the SIAC.
The contest was close throughout. The largest lead of the game came after
Calvin McCutcheon hit a pair of free throws to give Benedict a 42-36 advantage with 6:50 left in the second half. Savannah State cut the lead to 52-50 with 28 seconds left in the second half.
Tajh Green hit a free throw with 17 seconds left to give the Tigers a 53-50 lead. Savannah State hit a 3-pointer to tie the contest and send the game to overtime.
In overtime,
NyQuan McCombs drilled a 3-pointer to put Benedict up 58-56 with 2:21 remaining. Savannah State hit a layup to tie the game at 58 with 35 seconds left. Bing hit one free throw with 22 seconds left, then Savannah State missed a shot and Bing grabbed the rebound and was fouled. He sank another free throw with 13 seconds left for the final margin.
Green led the Tigers with 14 points and 11 rebounds. McCombs added 12 points. Eleik Bowles scored 20 points to lead Savannah State.
The overtime win was the first in Coach
Artis Maddox's four seasons at Benedict, and the first overtime contest for the Tigers since Jan. 20, 2020.
Benedict is back in action with a home game against Albany State on Thursday, starting at 7:30 p.m.
