COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers scored 37 unanswered points to take a commanding early lead and cruised to a 95-45 victory over Albany State University on Thursday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
The Lady Tigers avenged an earlier season overtime loss at Albany State with their largest margin of victory of the season. Benedict improves to 19-7 overall and 12-3 in the SIAC. Albany State falls to 8-16 overall and 7-8 in the SIAC.
The Lady Tigers were hot from long range, connecting on a season-high 15 3-point attempts on 37 attempts for a season-best 40.5 percent. Benedict shot a season-best 53 percent (35-of-66) from the field and dished a season-high 30 assists.
Ayanna Armstead made five 3-pointers and scored 19 points.
Jasmine Gholson hit four 3-pointers and scored 15 points.
Camryn Bostick also scored 15 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
Wykira Johnson-Kelly scored 14 points and
Ay'Anna Bey chipped in 13 points.
Albany State opened the game scoring the first four points. Benedict then scored the next 26 points of the first quarter for a 26-4 lead. The run continued into the second quarter, with the Lady Tigers scoring the first 11 points for a 37-4 lead. Benedict took a 53-10 lead at the half. The lead grew to 54 points, 76-22, heading into the fourth quarter.
Benedict held Albany State to an opponent season-low 22.1 percent (15-of-68) shooting. The Lady Tigers forced 20 turnovers, which led to 33 points.
Benedict will wrap up the regular season on Tuesday when they host rival Allen University at 5:30 p.m.
