COLUMBIA, S.C. –
Timothy Bing Jr. had a key steal with five seconds left and sank two free throws as the Benedict College Tigers defeated Fort Valley State, 80-75, in a SIAC men's basketball contest on Saturday afternoon in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Bing finished with 22 points to lead the Tigers, who avenged Monday's loss to the Wildcats and improved to 15-5 overall and 11-2 in the SIAC. Fort Valley State falls to 5-14 overall and 5-7 in the SIAC.
Tajh Green came off the bench to add 18 points, while
Malachi McCoy added 17 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
The game was close from the start. Neither team had more than a six-point lead the entire game. There were 15 lead changes, and the game was tied nine times. The final lead change came with 4:11 left to play, when Bing hit a jumper to give the Tigers a 68-67 lead. Two free throws by Bing with 3:12 left, and two more free throws by Green gave Benedict a 72-67 lead, their largest of the second half, with 2:43 remaining.
The Wildcats cut the lead to 76-75 with 56 seconds left after a four-point play by KJ Doucet. The Tigers came down and Green missed a shot, but
Brandon Smith snagged the offensive rebound and put it back for a 78-75 lead with 28 seconds left. Bing then stole the ball from Doucet and was fouled. He made both free throws with five seconds left for the final score.
The Tigers shot 52.5 percent, their third-best performance of the season, despite hitting just 3-of-14 from beyond the 3-point line. Fort Valley State stayed in the game by hitting 10 3-pointers and connecting on 17-of-18 free throws.
Benedict outscored the Wildcats 44-20 in the paint and 23-10 in points off turnovers.
The Tigers return to action on Monday, hosting Clark Atlanta in another SIAC contest. Tipoff is 7:30 p.m.
