SUMTER, S.C. – The Benedict College baseball team bounced back from dropping the first game of a doubleheader against Morris College to take the second game on Monday afternoon.
Morris won the first game 8-5 to pick up its first win of the season. Benedict scored three runs in the fifth inning to take the lead in the second game and put the game away with five runs in the sixth inning for an 11-6 victory.
Benedict improves to 3-19 on the season. Morris is now 1-10.
Morris scored three unearned runs in the first inning and three more unearned runs in the sixth in the first game.
Taj Bates went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Reno Brock went 2-for-2, while
Jorge Baez went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
The Tigers tied the second game at 2-2 in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Brock. Benedict took the lead in the fifth inning on an RBI single by
Bradon O'Connor, then added two more runs for a 5-2 lead. The Hornets cut the lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth, but the Tigers added five more runs in the sixth.
Ashley Poitier had an RBI single, and
Jayden Jordan and
Jalen McDuffie each drove in a pair of runs on singles.
O'Connor went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, three runs scored and four stolen bases.
The Tigers are back on the road on Tuesday, traveling to Augusta to take on Paine College in a non-conference doubleheader.
