COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College softball team cruised to a pair of victories over Allen University in a doubleheader on Saturday at Tiger Field.
Benedict won the first game 20-1, then took the second game 16-6. Both games were shortened to five innings due to the 10-run rule.
Benedict improves to 17-14 overall. Allen falls to 0-11.
The Lady Tigers scored 11 runs in the first inning of the first game.
Olivia Townsend had a two-run single,
Daisha Mitchell had an RBI single, and
T'Yannah Lake had an RBI triple.
Ariana Ellis had a solo home run in the third inning.
Savanna Marshall allowed just three hits and struck out nine.
In the second game, Benedict pushed across two runs in the first inning as
Ajah Gaston had an RBI single. Then the Lady Tigers added nine runs in the second inning. Four runs scored on a single by
Taylor McNeal and a fielding error by the Lady Yellow Jackets. Gaston had an inside-the-park home run, and
Chelsey Gotel had a bases-loaded triple to bring home three runs.
Deyonce Lewis added an inside-the-park home run in the third inning.
Keirra Evans picked up the win, allowing six hits and striking out five.
Benedict wore pink jerseys and socks in honor of breast cancer awareness. In between games, the players from both teams united to release pink balloons for breast cancer awareness.
Benedict and Allen will meet again on Sunday at 1 p.m. for the third game of the series.
